CNPC Economics & Technology Research Institute (CNPC ETRI, or ETRI), directly under the headquarters of CNPC, is mainly engaged in corporate strategy research and decision-making support. The institute is a pilot unit of the first batch of China Top Think Tanks, and also serves as one of the first batch of research and consulting agencies of the National Energy Administration of China. The predecessor of ETRI was the Scientific and Technological Information Institute under the Ministry of Petroleum Industry of China, founded in 1964.

In its six-decade journey, ETRI has always been keeping pace with latest economic, social and technological progress, shouldering its responsibility in serving the nation, the industry and CNPC, and has now become a corporate think tank dedicated to strategic research and decision support. The experts in ETRI are experienced and competent in research area including energy strategy and security, energy economy and market, energy geopolitics and international cooperation, energy technological innovation and development, corporate governance and management, etc. ETRI has won worldwide recognition and influence by making a series of high-quality achievements in soft science research.

ETRI has embarked on a new journey since been nominated as a pilot member of the 25 China Top Think Tanks. In 2020, ETRI also began to serve as CNPC Research Center of China Top Think Tanks. As an implementation platform for building state high-end think tanks, ETRI gives full play to its strengths in gathering insights for open research and exchanging thoughts between CNPC and external think tanks to fulfil its functions in policy consulting, theoretical innovation, social services, public opinion guiding, and public diplomacy, etc.

In the future, ETRI will play its due role as a China Top Think Tank as well as One Department & Three Centers of CNPC, and be dedicated to predictive, strategic and targeted research on critical issues regarding to the nation, the industry and CNPC. We strive to offer high-quality research achievement and decision support services, in a bid to build ETRI into a world-class institute and an innovative corporate think tank with Chinese characteristics.
